The natural disaster that occurred in Haiti last week was definitely one of the most tragic events that could occur within this short beginning of 2010. As I was sitting on the couch late at night, staring at the CNN, I realized the lessons our state, if not world, should learn from this horrifying event.
1. Be Generous.
The response and aid from people and countries across the globe are absolutely incredible to witness. From programs that people can donate through text messages to concerts and performances put on, these efforts have truly opened my eyes to what it means to be a citizen of this world. As I was watching the news, I realized something: this tragedy could very well occur in California in a matter of years. Be generous with your money! The efforts you show and the things you share in order to save others will be remembered. When our supposedly great earthquake hits, you never know what will happen. Perhaps one day the people you saved with your money will be sending their help and love over to you in your time of need.
2. Charge Your Cell phone!!!!!
Incredibly, after four days of being under the rubble of a collapsed building, a woman has reportedly been sending text messages to her family telling them to send rescuers to help her. I admit: I am definitely guilty when it comes to charging my cell phone. It had often been my policy to only charge my phone when it is almost dead. NO. You never know when a natural disaster, or even just a car accident or other special instance, when the only communication you have is through your phones. You won’t know how long you’ll need it for. Charge it often so if something occurs, you will have a phone that will last as long as possible.
3. Though Cliché, Appreciate Life Every Single Day.
I am sure most of you have heard the saying “live like there’s no tomorrow”. Well you never know if there WILL be a tomorrow. Love all those around you, even the ones you really despise. Live in the moment. Stop thinking about what could / would / should be in your future or what should had been or should not have been in your past. Just STOP. Just live and soak in the very second you are experiencing. Don’t miss out on a wonderful thing called life.
